Single medallion Eagle,Chelaberd or Sunburst Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus,Armenia
Age: circa 1870
Size: 6′.10″x 4′.5″ (208×135 cm)
This beautiful single medallion Eagle Kazak has a particularly fine weave for the type, comparable to many Shirvans. The tomato red field shows a central ivory eagle medallion with a green cruciform center. At each end of the field are ivory and navy “moustaches” centered by dark blue reserves with yellow flowers. These reserves are usually black. In the field small rosettes, boxes, small diamonds are scattered about. The classic ivory main border employs connected stars and pairs of little diamonds. The minor borders both show triangle reciprocals in blue and black. There are four bitonal barber pole narrow lines in the border system.Light red selvedges are original and intact and at each end is a warp macrame band. All the colors are from natural sources. The piece is in good pile and condition.
