Phulkari from the Punjab embroidered in soft floss silk in shades of yellow, cream, pink and pale green with touches of violet, on rather coarse rust coloured khaddar (hand-loomed cotton) in two panels, representing roughly one third and two thirds of the width. The very classic pattern is of blocks of diamonds, each of which is outlined with bands of yellow open work embroidery, giving a lacy effect. See also photo of the reverse. The very soft silk thread has become thin in places and there are other signs of wear, for example along the edges (further photos can be supplied if wanted) but basically the dense embroidery is intact and very decorative. First half of the 20th century. 225cm/88"x 136cm/53".
