berber handira (shawl or cape) from the high atlas. This rare, very fine cape is the work of the little known Ait Atta Berber group in the extreme eastern edge of the High Atlas Mountains close to the Algerian border. It is in perfect condition and was probably used only for ceremonial or other special occasions. It is woven with fine, hand spun, Berber wool throughout. a similar piece in size, colour and design is shown on page 158 of the text book "Marokko" by Kurt Rainer which is part of a famous Austrian collection.
