Meiji Boro Futon - Indigo, Stripes and Lattices

This is a wonderful antique Japanese boro futon cover from the early Meiji period (late 19th century).

There are four panels to this boro futonji, all of which are heavily patched and mended. The ground is hand spun and hand woven indigo dyed cotton, spun into a sankuzushi, or lattice weave, pattern. The mending patches include a gorgeous array of shima (striped), checked, and solid indigo cotton fragments as well as small bits of katazome and hand spun kasuri.
