Antique Yomut Turkmen tribal embroidered felt ceremonial horse blanket.
Size: 7ft 7inx 5ft 9in (230 x 176cm) excluding tassels.
Circa 1900 or earlier.
This horse blanket belongs to a small group of well known ceremonial horse blankets woven by the Yomut Turkmen tribes of Turkmenistan. The blanket is finely embroidered in wool on a thick dense un-dyed brown wool felt, These blankets of thick heavy felt were mainly for use during the colder winter months.
The blanket is in exceptionally good original condition, with very slight wear and signs of use.
A superb collectible display item. a closely related example is published in 'Adorning the Horse' The Textile Museum Washington; Cat no 124, Plate 44, pages 176, 177 and 240, Brick Freedman Collection, dated as 2nd half 19th century.
