Period: Late 19th century
Origin: Mahal region, Iran
Dimensions: 213 x 295 cm
This late 19th century Mahal rug is a classic representative of the weaving traditions from the Arak region of West Persia. Known for their spontaneous and slightly less formal interpretations of classical Persian designs, Mahal rugs from this period are highly valued by interior designers for their large scale patterns and decorative appeal.
The composition features a deep indigo field decorated with an elegant “all over” floral lattice. Rather than being confined by a central medallion, the design utilizes repeating, oversized palmettes and stylized blossoming shrubs that create a sense of expansive, rhythmic growth. The vibrant terracotta and madder red of the floral motifs provide a striking contrast against the dark midnight blue ground, while accents of soft gold and sky blue add layers of detail to the botanical elements.
The central field is framed by a bold, wide main border on a warm terracotta ground. This border features a rhythmic succession of large rosettes and stylized floral sprays, connected by a delicate vine scroll. Multiple narrow guard stripes with geometric and floral repeats provide a clean finish to the overall design. This rug exemplifies the robust construction and sophisticated color harmony that make 19th century Mahal rugs timeless additions to both traditional and modern spaces.
