Period: Mid 19th Century
Origin: Caucasus
Dimensions: 161 x 170 cm
This rare, mid 19th-century Karachop rug is an absolute triumph of Caucasian tribal art, standing as one of the most iconic and highly coveted design traditions from the Southwest Caucasus region. Hand-knotted with lustrous, hand-spun wool that retains a wonderful tactile substance, this collector’s piece exhibits the legendary structural block format and monumental geometric gravity unique to the finest early Karachop weavings. The central composition is beautifully anchored by a signature, massive octagonal medallion in ivory cream, deeply inset with a vibrant madder-red core and highly stylized, archaic geometric scrollwork that channels a profound historical presence.
Surrounding this majestic focal point is an exceptionally rare and vibrant field treatment. The central medallion floats against a finely stippled, multi-colored geometric background, which is dynamically flanked by four prominent, ivory-ground corner squares intricately decorated with nested, polychrome star emblems. Vertically framing the main axis are beautifully detailed, rectangular cartouches enclosing ancient hook-shaped tribal amulets. The masterful control over natural vegetable dyes is outstanding across this expansive canvas, showing a brilliant, glowing emerald-green ground that contrasts beautifully against rich shades of sky blue, warm ochre, and deep madder red.
Framing this grand visual narrative is a remarkably crisp and powerful border system that structures the energetic field with perfect symmetry. The main border features a warm golden-beige ground beautifully animated by a continuous, angular wave scroll and alternating geometric latchhook segments, closely flanked by precise, micro-patterned checkerboard guard stripes that lend an exceptional sense of architectural definition. Exhibiting a wonderfully authentic aged patina, soft natural abrash variations where the colors have matured gracefully over nearly two centuries, and an exceptionally well-preserved pile, this museum-grade textile carries an immense visual authority. Its combination of rigid geometry, bold color blocks, and profound ancestral symbolism gives it a timeless artistic quality that commands any space, making it a stellar investment piece for the most discerning private collection or curated contemporary interior.
