At over 10 metres (33.46 feet) this is the longest antique kilim runner we have seen!
In three decades of dealing in antique kilims, this very long antique Turkman kilim runner stands out above all others we have ever encountered for its extraordinary length, stretching to an astonishing and truly exceptional 10 metres (33’46”)—by far the longest piece of its kind we have had.
Yet this remarkable piece is not only exceptional for its size, but also for its beauty. The main field is composed of a navy-blue grid, within which finely woven pinkish-red motifs are carefully arranged. The ends of the runner feature broad plain bands of colour, providing a striking visual balance to the intricate central design.
The wool is extraordinarily finely spun, allowing for a small-scale and highly detailed pattern. This runner must have been woven for an important or luxurious interior, as evidenced by the exceptional quality of the materials: the wool is soft and lustrous, and the dyes are natural, with rich and nuanced tones.
A truly rare kilim runner. We would love to know the setting for which this luxurious weaving was originally created, but it was certainly destined for a distinguished home.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 1020×90 cms (33.46 feet)!
Origin: Turkmen tribes, Afghanistan or Turkmenistan
Date of weaving: 1900s
