Origin: Iran
Dimensions: 68 x 103 cm
This rare, early 20th century Qum rug is an exquisite masterpiece of Persian city weaving, showcasing the exceptional artistic innovation and refinement that has made the workshops of Qum highly celebrated worldwide. Woven with an incredibly dense knotting structure on a fine foundation, this piece displays a remarkable fluid motion and graphic precision that brings its poetic bird and nature theme to life. The central composition features a beautifully contoured, elongated midnight blue medallion that acts as a dramatic canvas for a pair of majestic, stylized paradise birds or cranes, rendered with striking multicolored plumage as they intertwine amidst a dense paradise of scrolling floral vines, delicate blossoms, and split palmettes.
The primary midnight blue cartouche is set against a luminous ivory field, which is heavily animated by cascading floral arabesques, sweeping vines, and vibrant scrolling tendrils that frame the central aviary scene with flawless symmetry. The sophisticated palette is rich and beautifully balanced, contrasting the deep indigo ground with vibrant shades of madder red, ochre gold, sapphire blue, and soft salmon pink, creating a brilliant visual depth that shimmers across the fine wool pile. Framing this poetic pictorial layout is an elegant, wide madder red main border filled with a continuous series of alternating floral medallions and scrolling palmettes, meticulously flanked by delicate polychrome guard stripes that perfectly anchor the intense contrast of the central field.
Exhibiting an outstanding level of preservation, a remarkably even pile, and a wonderfully supple handle, this fine textile carries a timeless elegance and an undeniable decorative power. The harmonious aging of the organic dyes over the past century has softened the rich tones while enhancing the crisp clarity of every leaf and feather outline, giving the entire layout a beautiful painterly quality. It stands as a magnificent testament to the early creative peak of Qum design history, seamlessly combining traditional Persian court iconography with a highly precise and expressive weaving execution, making it both a prized treasure for discerning collectors and a sophisticated, luxurious statement piece for any interior space.
