a long time ago, at the beginning of my textile passion, i went to Venice for an Islamic art exhibition. After a full immersion in that fabulous world i took a walk in the fascinating city. In a small shop i happened to see lots of bits and pieces of Italian, French and other textile cultures, mostly in bad condition. i chose among others two damaged but incredibly beautiful Indian silk sarees. Here there is a fragment of what i called "the green golden nature". i later found out they were the so-called "Gold sarees from Benares/Varanasi". I had no idea about their age, weaving or colors, but i loved them. Later somebody told me they were not very old, probably only from the early 20th. Now it's time for them pass over to a new lover. If interested please dm or email carlokocman@gmail.com A Benares (or Banarasi) golden silk saree is a masterpiece of Indian handloom, famous for its rich texture and intricate zari (metallic gold/silver thread) work. These luxurious drapes—ranging from pure mulberry silk brocades to lighter tissue and georgette weaves—are highly prized for weddings and grand festivities.(text from Instagram/hmr.handlooms)
