Antique Ersari Turkmen torba face with 'schemle gul design. Size: 4ft 5in x 1ft 1in (135 x 33cm) Circa 1900. Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed. This example has a repeat shemle gul design that is also found on weavings by the Saryk Turkmen. The colour is soft earth tones with browns, blues and pink. The torba has good wool with a very soft floppy handle. The torba is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and full pile.
