Antique Uzbek yurt rug, known as Julkyrs or Dschulchir rugs; commonly called bearskin rugs. Size: 13ft 4in x 8ft 2in (406 x 250cm). Circa 1900/20. These rugs woven by the nomads of Uzbekistan were for use on the floor of the family yurt. The long soft pile made them comfortable under foot, and they are often referred to as sleeping rugs; similar to the gabbeh rugs of southern Persia. The rugs were woven on simple narrow looms in long strips, these were then joined together to make the rug. This example is of very large size and has a traditional design of large guls containing stars, and is woven in four long strips. The bold design and bright colour palette would stand out well in the poorly lit yurt, bringing warmth and comfort to the interior. The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good long pile. The rug is suitable for heavy domestic use such as an entrance hall or living room.
