Antique Baluch rug from Western Afghanistan, probably Herat region, of small size with a bold Mushwani design giving a very striking visual effect.
Size: 5ft 3in x 2ft 10in (160 x 88cm).
Circa 1900.
This striking small Baluch rug has bands of the so called 'Mushwani' design in alternating colours of madder red, green and dark indigo blue, creating a large scale zig zag effect. The simple white ground borders really stand out.
The rug is in good condition with slight even wear and good pile. The rug has excellent soft wool and a floppy handle. The rug retains the original kilim end finish at both ends, with long ivory tassels.
The rug is suitable for normal domestic use, or would make a superb wall hanging.
