Period: Late 19th Century Origin: Saujbulag, Iran Dimensions: 154 x 265 cm This late 19th century Saujbulag rug is a profound example of Kurdish tribal weaving from Northwest Persia. Saujbulag rugs are highly esteemed by collectors for their deep saturated color palettes and their use of high quality lustrous wool which gives them a distinctively heavy and tactile handle. The composition features a somber midnight blue field decorated with a dense rhythmic all over pattern of stylized floral medallions and geometric tribal motifs. The design avoids the use of a central medallion instead focusing on a repeating sequence of primary and secondary icons that create a sense of infinite structured movement across the dark ground. The palette is rich and authoritative utilizing deep madder red burnt orange and forest green to articulate the intricate patterns while subtle touches of ivory provide necessary highlights. Surrounding the central field is a robust border system that reinforces the rug’s powerful character. The main border set against a saturated red ground showcases a traditional crab or stylized palmette design connected by an angular vine scroll. Multiple narrow guard stripes featuring geometric running dog and floral repeats frame the piece providing a crisp and formal finish. This rug stands as a testament to the technical mastery and artistic gravity of late 19th century Kurdish nomadic art. Please send me direct mail. emreaydin10@icloud.com Instagram - @emreaydinrug
