eriod: Mid 19th Century Origin: Shirvan, Caucasus Dimensions: 135 x 183 cm This mid 19th century Shirvan rug is a refined example of the Caucasian weaving tradition, known for its precise geometric drafting and crisp color contrasts. While earlier Shirvan rugs often featured more spontaneous tribal layouts, mid century examples like this one emphasize a clean, repetitive order that makes them highly adaptable to both traditional and modern interiors. The composition features an all over “shrub” or “flower head” motif, arranged in rhythmic horizontal rows across a luminous ivory field. Each individual element is rendered with sharp, angular precision in varying shades of terracotta, sky blue, and indigo. The choice of an ivory ground is particularly effective, as it allows the vibrant, multifaceted motifs to stand out with graphic clarity. The rug is framed by a series of sophisticated borders that define its formal character. The wide main border, set against a deep madder red ground, showcases a traditional “calyx and leaf” or “serrated leaf and glass” design in alternating colors. This is flanked by several narrow guard stripes featuring repeating geometric florets. This piece represents a graceful continuation of Caucasian nomadic art, distilled into a polished and balanced decorative work of the mid 19th century.
