Antique Ushak Carpet, Western Anatolia ,
Circa last quarter 19th century (c. 1875–1900)
Size: 3 × 4 meters (approx. 9 ft 10 in × 13 ft 1 in)
Large village Ushak carpet with wool pile on wool foundation, featuring a classic medallion design and a warm, naturally dyed palette dominated by madder red, soft blues, greens, and mustard yellow. The structure shows the supple handle and slight irregularities typical of 19th-century Anatolian weaving. Honest wear consistent with age; no obvious synthetic dyes visible.
Provenance: Found at a church sale in Vienna’s 14th district, where it had reportedly been used under the altar. There is a possible — though speculative — link to the nearby estate of Archduchess Elisabeth Marie of Habsburg, where “oriental rugs” of similar size are recorded.
