Caucasian or Northwest İran...
I am sharing this mid-19th-century rug for a detailed discussion on its regional characteristics and folk art elements. Based on its structural and aesthetic features, the piece originates from the high-altitude weaving transition zone between the Southern Caucasus and Northwest Iran.
...
Geographic Influence: The rug reflects the 'Highland' aesthetic of the region. The use of lustrous, high-quality wool and saturated natural dyes (madder reds and indigo blues) is typical of the nomadic and semi-nomadic pastoralist groups inhabiting these mountainous areas.
Narrative Folk Art: The defining feature of this piece is its pictorial nature. Moving beyond pure abstraction, the weaver incorporated local fauna and human figures into the field. This represents a long-standing regional tradition of 'storytelling through textiles,' where the rug serves as a visual record of daily life and environmental surroundings.
Design Layout: The composition follows a classic triple-medallion vertical axis, a hallmark of the regional design vocabulary. However, the spontaneous placement of figures—birds, quadrupeds, and humans—distinguishes it from workshop productions and identifies it as a genuine piece of rural folk art.
Border Motifs: The primary border features reciprocating 'running water' and stylized horn motifs, symbolizing the essential life-giving elements of the geography.
