Antique Caucasian Gendje Rug With Persons, late 19th century
319 cm x 114 cm
An extraordinary rare, charming, collectible and decorative tribal antique rug from Gendje, in the Central Caucasus. It transmits a festive sensation with its pairs of ‘circus’-like human figures of somewhat naive design. The birds are reduced to little more than polychrome triangles, as happens with the stylized animals, particularly the two red bulls in the upper part of the field, and the two beasts that strangely appear in the upper corners of the primary border. Two yellow ‘hooked’ motifs, analogous to those on the border, appear in the middle of the field. The seven medallions show two concentric diamonds of reciprocal ‘animal heads’, where the red-colored ‘heads’ protrude from the external diamond and insert themselves into the inner one. The two secondary borders are also composed of two reciprocal designs of the same green and red colors.
Wool pile knotted on wool foundation. Very good condition. Good pile. Complete.
This rug was published in the book “Rugs & Art”, Hali pl, London 2017, Plate 133, Pages 236 and 237. The rug is so unusual that that this is the one and only example with this design that i found in specialized literature.
Provenance: Trybiarz Collection – Buenos Aires
