a fine antique Uzbek Shahrisabz silk embroidered mihrab suzani repurposed into a saddle cover / horse blanket. The original Suzani would have dated to the late 19th century / early 1900’s and since silk was valued like gold in Central Asia and often recycled than disposed, at some point in its history this Suzani was repurposed into this saddle cover. It has very fine silk chain-stitched embroidery on a classic beige woven ground often associated with suzanis of Karshi or Shahrisabz region. The floral design and colours are vibrant. Unlike original saddle covers the shape of this is elongated. It has been finished with a cotton lining and silk cotton Ikat edging and lovely polychrome silk tassels. a reconstructed but fun piece from a broken antique Suzani which still echoed the textile art of the era.
