Small auspiciously designed circular rug from Inner Mongolia, i.e. the Baotou / Suiyuan region of China. The design features the central Shou symbol - the Chinese symbol of longevity - surrounded by a circle of five bats, the ‘Wu Fu’ or ‘five blessings’ and an outer dark blue border. It was made towards the end of Qing Dynasty, that is circa 1900, the main field is undyed natural brown wool, the warp and weft are cotton and the diameter is +/- 74cm (approximately 29in). The pile is worn in parts as seen in the photo, but the carpet is stable and has no repairs, and has been edged with a thin strip of blue cotton cloth to protect the edges from any unraveling / fraying. It is a ‘complete’ carpet, that is it was made ‘as is’ and not a fragment of a larger carpet. For more photos and information please see https://warpandweft.club/portfolio-item/baotou-suiyuan-item-5/
