Antique Yomut Turkmen tribal ceremonial horse saddle rug. Size: 3ft 5inx 2ft 9in (105 x 85cm). Circa 1890. This horse saddle rug belongs to a small group of well known ceremonial horse covers, rugs and associated items woven by the Yomut Turkmen tribes of North Eastern Persia. The saddle rug in finely knotted with dense velvet like pile, giving the item the strength required for use. The banded design in shades of madder red, indigo blue and ivory is typical of this group of weavings. Note the slit in the rug, top centre for the pommel. There is an early uk customs tag attached to one corner. The saddle rug is in original condition with very slight wear and almost full pile, the dye quality is superb give the rich colours required for use on special occasions such as a tribal wedding.
