Antique Caucasian Kuba Rug, early 20th century
185 cm x 122 cm
A decorative tribal antique rug, woven in the early 20 th century, in the Shirvan- Kuba region of the Caucasus. With a nice balanced palette. On the midnight-blue field, four motifs with protruding “horns” and blossoms, are placed. In their center, a diamond is featured, which contains similar but smaller ones. The border system is formed by the main beautiful floral guard, which with its ivory color, masterfully frames the piece. The smaller guards, featuring a luminous blue, are in the so called “carnation design”, idiosyncratic of Kuba rugs. The field is framed by the inner reciprocal triangles line. On the same field we can find a myriad of stylized animals and birds in diverse designs, some of them are drawn by an ivory outline, plus a bicolor filling on their bodies, others, smaller ones, are materialized just by a few knots. The field is also populated by an array of rosettes, eight pointed stars and diverse tribal motifs.
Wool pile knotted on wool foundation. Some foundation visible (please see photos). Repaired crease on lower section. Low pile. Still fair condition for its age.
