Qur'an or Talisman Wrap - Circa 1880 Afshar This exquisite woven piece, measuring approximately 20 x 20 cm (excluding tassels), features an extra-weft wrapping technique on a plainweave ground. Originating from the Sirjan region around 1880, it exemplifies a unique form of protective container traditionally used to safeguard prayers or miniature Qur'ans. In various regions of Iran, small boxes made from different materials are crafted to hold written prayers and are commonly worn as armlets. However, nomadic groups, lacking access to such boxes, weave fabric containers instead. This unusual cross-shaped wrap likely served as a Qur'an or prayer talisman cover, with cords designed to fasten it securely around the arm. The five star-like motifs adorning the piece may symbolize the "Five Holy Figures" (Pantan) revered in Shiite Islam. This description and example correspond to a similar artifact displayed in Afshar by Parviz Tanavoli, page 174, where such woven protective pieces are examined in detail.
