Back
So-called 'Gansu-kilim' from China. This piece vividly displays the wood block print designs scattered throughout the natural undyed wool of the main-field, and is adorned by five Manchurian cranes which are woven into the tapestry / kilim itself. Over time the woodblock print designs have faded in many of these pieces, but their impressions on this piece still remain relatively strong. It was made sometime in the mid 1800's / 19th c., the size is 266cm x 117m (104.5in x 46in) and is constructed of naturally coloured wool and natural dyes. Other than for the fraying in a some areas of the selvedge, and the missing stripes at the bottom, overall it is in good condition with the woodblock print designs remaining quite prominent. Although the weave is heavy enough that it could be used / displayed on the floor, it would make a stunning display piece on a wall.
