a very rare and visually stunning antique Uzbek silk velvet Ikat ilgich / ayna khalta made in the 19th century. This is not a repurposed piece but rather an original mirror cover for wedding ceremony made by the Lakai tribe. Velvet ikats were considered some of the most coveted and expensive textiles produced by people of Central Asia. While most were tailored into chapans / robes or large hanging, smaller square pieces were used for other textiles. The velvet Ikat / Allah bakhmal is magnificent. The design boasts classic velvet Ikat motifs and ornaments and rendered with gorgeous natural dyes in primary colours. The piece is finished with classic silk cross-stitched embroidery that is typical of the Lakai work. i have only seen a number of silk velvet Ikat mirror bags such as this; they are rare and this is a fine example. It is edged with gorgeous polychrome tassels and finished with an outstanding block print indigo and madder lining. In near perfect condition, worthy of any good collection. Offered at a fair price. . size: 58cm x 55cm (23”x 21”).
