a dazzling Antique Uzbek cross stitched silk embroidery made by the Lakai Tribe of Central Asia. It dates the late 19th Century and is known as Ilgich. Such textiles were embroidered as bride's dowry offering and would be hung on the Yurt so the protective motifs would ward off evil eye. This is an impressive example of such Lakai cross stitch ilgich. Compared to most examples, it has a very intricate design, with a four large quad hooked motifs surrounded by intricate rams horn patterned smaller motif arrange in a random manner. It creates asymmetry within a very symmetrical form. These motifs repeat in an array of rich hot primary colours that simply elevate the visual dazzle of the piece. The borders repeat similar motifs once again in rich primary colours against a black negative space. If you defocus your point of view on the negative black part of the design, the whole visual experience changes. i am also impressed that is has the orginal crochet and polychrome tassels. In good shape with a natural patina and a classic bag shaped striped cotton lining. a fine work of textile art, offered at a reasonable price that would add nicely to any collection.
