Moroccan Henna Tie-Dyed Head Scarf. Wool with silk tassels. Size: 60'' x 56'' (152 x 142 cm). Created by Ida Ou Nadif Berbers of the Central Anti Atlas, this head scarf is a captivating fusion of craftsmanship and symbolism. The Berbers of Morocco played a pivotal role in popularizing the use of henna in dyeing some of their textiles. Henna, not indigenous to the region, was imported and believed to possess special blessings and powers. This scarf, made from plain woven wool, demonstrates the intricate resist-dyeing and painting techniques used in its creation. Achieving darker areas involved repeat dyeing, adding depth and richness to the overall design. The scarf is adorned with fringe and features a sewn silk ribbon at the top, not only providing extra support but also vividly accentuating the earth-toned palette of the piece.
