This is possibly a unique textile from the Aymara tradition. Purchased in Bolivia in 1984 and said to be a saddle blanket. It looks like it dates from the first half the 19th century or before - possibly colonial period - but there are no comps that i know of. It has some of the softest and most lustrous alpaca fiber imaginable. In color and spin of the wool it is highly unusual for an Aymara textile which are always very finely spun with tight two ply yarns. The yarns in this textile are loosely spun and full of loft. This piece is remarkably supple and the colors unusual. Size: 29 x 39 inches. It is complete with selvedges intact all around and a fringe sewn on to the edges as a decorative finish. This could be a one of a kind.
