Jalq'a bag in natural, un-dyed alpaca fiber. Bolivia, early 20th century. Weavings of the indigenous Jalq'a people from the Potolo region almost always have very strong synthetic reds, pinks and black dyes and date from the mid 20th century. Sometimes they are found without the strong synthetic reds. i did not collect the synthetic dyed pieces because of my bias against synthetics at the time even though the design and weaving of them was exceptional. i did manage to pick up a few of the natural colored pieces which were not often seen. This bag and the one in a previous post are two of the Potolo weavings i found in Bolivia years ago. Size: 11 x 15 inches. It was made as a" wayaka" or bag for carrying food to the pasture areas while herding alpacas and llamas. The design shows a stylized flying bird-like creature, probably a condor, but with the usual Potolo weaver's - freeform interpretation. The plain weave back shows simple horizontal warp bar strips and one bird creature. The natural dyed braided tie is likely not original to this bag.
