ikat: Silks of Central Asia - The Guido Goldman Collection by Kate Fitz-Gibbon and Andrew Hale (slip-cased edition, published 1997). Arguably still the most all-encompassing book on Central Asian Ikats (tie-dyed Ikat is an ancient technique, in which colours are applied to silk warp yarns in a multi-stage, tie-dye resist method before being woven). The Ikat silk textiles from Central Asia of the 1800’s / 19th-century are unrivalled in their glorious colours, imaginative designs, and technical mastery. This study highlights the Guido Goldman collection, at the time one of the most important and comprehensive collections worldwide. It also incorporates original research in Russia and Uzbekistan and describes the techniques used at different stages of production. It also examines the complex history of Central Asia where these textiles were produced and contains a detailed analysis of the evolution of Ikat design which shows the rich cross-fertilisation of influences between Ikat design, embroidery, carpets, jewellery and ceramics. Simply a magnificently illustrated and very important work on Ikats and their Central Asian production in the 1800’s. The book comes inside a two piece stiff hard cardboard protective slip-case which has some slight shelf ware and rubbed edges; the dust jacket itself has only very minor shelf ware from being kept inside the slip-case; while the hard cover book itself is in excellent condition throughout. 368 pages with 500 illustrations (424 in colour). a large book; slip-case size is 39cm high x 32cm wide x 5cm thick (i.e. 15.3in x 12.5in x 2in respectively). From our own collection, and now surplus to our needs, it comes from a smoke free environment. Cost is a mere 80 Euros plus postage, which is 22 Euros to most European countries and the uk.
