large and impressive fragment of a precolombian chiribaya mantle with multi-eyed snakes on blue and white panels.it is made of 3 fragments sewn together. one half with the multicolored side has both original selvedge. on the other half one piece has also both selvedge original while the third piece has only one. the ends of the striped panels are also original. very nice well preserved colours on warp-faced camelid wool. the actual size is 192x 76cm but it can be mounted following an other display as obviously this is not the original one. in need of cleaning. some other mantle with this snake design are conserved in public collection, for example please see "Weaving for the Afterlife (Makowski et al. 2006: 321, catalogue nº 268, see figure 9).
