Uzbek woman's dress, silk warp and weft, late 19th century, 65 inches across the shoulder, 50 inches high. Unlike Uzbek coats, Uzbek dresses are rare. Since there is no top to bottom front opening, the pattern is unbroken on both sides. The surviving all silk ikat fabrics tend to have rather simple patterns and a limited range of colors. The fabric used in this dress has six different colors and the patterns are complex, fine scaled, and very precisely executed. It is a tour de force of the Uzbek ikat dyer's art. In excellent condition.
