SRW15 Sitting Rug, Tibet, Late 19th-Early 20th 78x82cm excluding fringe Wool warp and weft. Natural dyes. This rug would have been used on the seat of an important monk or Lama, such that the hairy fringe would have kept out any drafts while he was sitting in the monastery. The central swastika represents steadfastness and stability in ancient Buddhist symbology. There is a floral pattern in each of the corners of the main section, then a series of borders radiating outwards, with plain colours, then white pearls, then a Chinese meander design and finally the hairy blue border.
