Spectacular, large, near mint condition 19th century Middle Amu Daria Turkmen wedding trapping. Size: 71 x 23 inches - 180 x 59 cm. The design type features a large central medallion with an eight-pointed star within an octagon. All elements are well proportioned and balanced. This piece is complete with its original, beautifully braided hanging straps and fringes and is one of those rarely seen things that is in essentially unused condition. The piece has been in a private collection since the 1980's. When i got it it looked really great, but i decided to clean the piece because it had a bit of that stale old camel dung smoke odor. When i soaked it the water turned quite dark immediately - always a good sign when washing a piece that otherwise looks clean. After several changes of water with a bit of soap in the water it came up so beautifully, that i decided to re-post it. (see image of it still wet and drying in the garden below) Most Turkmen rugs have very good wool, often a bit hair-like, but very fine wool nonetheless that was bred for luster and strength. The wool in this trapping is unusually soft and downy. It could be lamb's wool or the soft belly wool from a well bred sheep. The dyes are all natural, rich and excellent with a striking turquoise-like blue/green, light and dark Indigo blue, rich madder red and apricot colors and a clear pale yellow. There is a slightly eroded white cotton present in some details. Knots are asymmetric open right and warps and wefts seem to be mixed grey/brown wool or sheep wool mixed with goat soft hair(?). The images seen here were shot outdoors in overcast light except for the detail of the back. i include an image of another trapping of the same design type to illustrate the size of this piece by comparison. The comparison piece (also for sale) is itself on the larger side for such things. It measures: 51 x 150 cm or 20 x 59 inches, but this newly cleaned trapping is extra large as you can see. Does size matter?
