Pre-Columbian Tapestry Textile. Very interesting mounted fragments of both faces of a large coca bag. Each half is nearly complete and there must have been damage at the very bottom of the bag that caused it to be mounted this way - otherwise it has excellent color preservation and condition. This coca bag with its mixed technique tapestry and patterned warp-faced weave composition is from the Ichma Culture of Peru. It shows a highly unusual combination of tapestry techniques that are only found in this rare group of bags which always show different designs on each face of the bag. Ichma bags are rare and with this sort of coloration and size - very rare. This example is a large bag even for the group which implies that the owner was of some importance. See the mage of this bag and another Ichma bag of a more typical size and coloration for comparison. a.d. 1100 - 1440. Size: 21 x 18.5 inches. Mounted size: 22 x 24 inches.
