The jacket is supposed to be part of a shaman's costume. It was worn at Guzhang festivals held by the Miao to renew and reinforce spiritual links with the ancestors. The base cloth is undyed hand-woven cotton. It is decorated with applied light green "sil felt" and embroidered with floss silk in satin stitch over papercuts in strong colours. On the ends of the "skirt panels" are short strings of "Job's tears" seeds and chicken feathers.
