Antique Naga Man’s Shawl from Manipur region India. 72 x 48 inches. The textile is handloomed cotton with a black, red, yellow and ivory strips. The weave has a tight fine weave with a flexible, silk-like handle. The material is cotton. The skirt is embroidered with five rows of animal and floral designs in a flat silk floss stitch. This skirt is nearly identical to the skirt pictured on page 139 (illus. 141) in Rosemary Crill’s book “Indian Embroidery.” She attributes the skirt to “Manipur for use by Eastern Angami Nagas, c. 1940.”
