Beautiful mid 19th c. East Anatolian large Kazak shield rug fragment from Kars

Woven in Kars region of East Anatolia by Borjalu (Borchaly) Kazaks who were immigrants to the area from in the early 1800s. These tribespeople were Karapapakhs, the descendants of old Bunturks, Kipchak and Oghuz who had lived in the Borchali region for centuries. (Thanks to Vugar Dadasov for this information).

The rug is woven from fine quality, lustrous wool on natural mid-brown local Kars sheep wool warps (as also found in Kars kilims) along with madder dyed wefts (a Borchaly feature) which contribute to the vibrant warm sheen characteristic of Kars rugs of this type. The drawing is excellent and the rug has all good, well saturated natural dyes contrasted with fine ivory white wool, a floppy handle and is structurally sound with holes and loss as visible in the photos. Estimated to be from the mid 19th century. One of my finds from Anatolia in June, the rug has been used as a wall hanging for many years. Size 206x135cm.
