Katazome strip, Japan. Hand loomed cotton, indigo. 78" long (197.7 cm) by 13" (33 cm) wide. Late 19th to early 20th century. Ex Fifi White, Berkeley, California. Katazome refers to the traditional resist dye technique using rice paste and bran squeezed through a stencil (katagami) to produce beautiful repeat patterns. This is a graceful composition of cranes (tsuru) and sea turtles (or possibly fresh-water turtles), symbolizing marital love, fidelity and longevity. This was likely part of an old futon cover. Excellent condition, no holes or spots.
