Early Edo Period Japanese Buddha

Fine circa 1700 carved wood figure of Shakyamuni Buddha from Edo Period Japan.

Composed of two sections in joined wood-block construction, this early Edo period Amida Buddha is finely carved in wood, finished in black and gilt lacquer. He is seated on double lotus pedestal with the large round lotus petal base characteristic of early Edo style. He sits in the lotus (Sanskrit padmasana) posture with thumbs joined together in the meditation or contemplation mudra (Sanskrit dhyana). The eyes are inset glass and the forehead is inset with a yellow crystal stone urna (a bindi in Hindu) one of the 32 signs of the Buddha. This Buddha rupa of an unusual size was formerly in a private collection in Brussels and would originally have sat on the shrine altar of a Japanese Zen temple or monastery.

The Buddha rupa is structurally sound with the mandorla missing, with patination and old wear consistent with its considerable age, including small surface lacquer losses, rubbing, cracking and remains of old labels. Overall Height: 27.5cm, width: 21.8cm. Height of Buddha: 17.5cm, width 14.2cm.
