Old Gafsa Tunisian kilim. Nearly square—86 inches long and 87 inches wide (219 x 221 cm). Some fraying and notches at the ends, and some small holes, due mainly to the corrosive black/dark brown dye. Mostly interlocking tapestry weave, but also has some eccentric wefting where motif shapes are curvilinear. Colors are stable and appear to all be from vegetal dyes. Colors include a yellow that might not be obvious in the images. Of the few such kilims I’ve seen, i believe this one is the oldest, and I’d guess circa 1900, maybe older. At first glance, it is not obvious that the camel caravans crossing either end include red camels between the blue ones.
