happi coat, Japan, Showa (circa 1950), cm 78x120. Happi are those traditional Japanese work coats often wearing name of an enterprise or related symbols, as sort of function as today’s commercial advertising. This one is quite uncommon, at first because of its green colour (they usually are indigo) and then due to representation of pieces used when playing the Chinese game ‘mah-jong’. Maybe it belonged to a professional mah-jong player, also because the kanji character reads ‘shoku’ (congratulations). Cotton cloth dyed in the tsutsugaki technique in excellent condition. a thing with an own ego.
