chinese rug with possibly some taoistic background as it possibly depicts an old well known legend; laozi leaving china to the west (in yumenguan , if i remember well) and writing the daodejing in one night. this kind of chinese realistic rug were mostly hanging, this one worn like this in its middle was made as meditation mat or later used like this? surely not as old as the story but an interesting object (for the non-turkmen collector) the warp and weft point to suiyuan area , second half 19th c. ca 110x 110cm
