An an exceptional antique Chinese silk embroidery from Qing dynasty. Dating to the 19th century, the fine stitch used in this piece is referred to as “the forbidden stitch”; the romantic explanation for the name being that young girls were forbidden to stitch such embroideries because the intricacy required could make them go blind. This outstanding example boasts a gorgeous design with bar and lotus motif near the centre. The gorgeous colours are all derived from natural dyes. The use of multiple tones of indigo gives the design a shading. It is on a beautiful red ground. a fragment of a larger garment ready to be hung as a magnificent textile art. It is in great shape.
