North-west Persian mafrash side panel; 120 x 65 cms; 19th century; wool warps, some a mix of ivory and brown wool; main panels in slit tapestry weave; minor bands in sumak; extensive use of white cotton; the panel of white cotton is compacted and patinated; mysterious brocaded animals at each end of the cotton panel; excellent condition with a few minor well done repairs; a top example of what has proved to be a less common type than it was thought 10 years ago; for similar examples: Tanavoli, Shahsavan, plate 119 (of which he says: “without doubt a masterpiece”); Azadi, Mafrash, page 82 (dated to first half of 19th century – probably too early).
