Bhutan masks. Pair of Bhutanese Mahakala wooden dance masks, circa first half 1900’s (probably 1910 – 1930) in excellent condition. The rich glossy patina was accomplished by liberal coatings of Shellac, a naturally occurring resin that dries to a high-gloss sheen of outstanding properties. (This resin is secreted by the 'lac bug', an insect belonging to the same 'family' from which cochineal is obtained.) Originally bought in Kathmandu in the early 1970’s from a Bhutanese family who had owned them for more than one generation. First time on the market since then, having been held in a single private collection since that time. There are no repairs or / restorations. Size: Red = Height 39cm (15.25”); Width 30cm11.75”); Depth 18cm (7”). Black = Height 42cm (16.5”); Width 31cm (12”); Depth 19cm (7.5”).
