Lao Song/Tai Dam Tunic - This rare old tunic is especially unusual because both inside and outside were used: the dark, undecorated inside was worn for ceremonial use, along with the skirt (tat328); the decorated side was turned to the outside for use on the owner's coffin. This example is particularly nice, with fine handspun cotton dyed in dark indigo as the background; small geometric pieces of silk are appliqued to form a lively design on the front, collar and lower hem. Sleeves are extended with fine cotton in brick red. Condition is very good, with only a few small holes. We rarely see these, and usually not this fine or old. The Lao Song people are mostly members of the Tai Dam ethnic group and are unusual in that they are located in several provinces in central Thailand, where they were brought forcibly, and have preserved their language, traditional dress and culture. Originally animistic, most have converted to Theravada Buddhism, but still adhere to elements of their previous beliefs. (Please see p.78 in Textiles and the Tai Experience in Southeast Asia.) We can also offer the skirt. Please write for more photos and info.
