a lovely two panel silver leaf screen, circa 1860. 90cm wide x 75cm tall (36 x 30 inches)
The small bird flies low above a river, a simple wash of colour blended into the sky, framed by blossoming prunus on the riverbank. The interaction between the texture of the silver leaf with some simple, vertical slashes of paint creates a hugely atmospheric image filled with depth, the sky seemingly filled with sheet rain. The smallness of the bird among this landscape evokes both the power and tranquillity of nature.
The unusual and sophisticated painting techniques work in harmony with the beautiful texture and natural tarnish of the silver leaf, making for a wonderful piece.
Condition:The front of the screen is in great original condition, with only a very small loss of paint at the bottom centre, either side of the hinges. There is a tiny indentation to the paper just by the birds wing, not quite a puncture mark. See images. The silk brocade is especially beautiful, and is in superb condition. The lacquered frame is in good order, with some minor scuffs and a thin scrape on the bottom edge of the right panel.
The bottom hinges have partially come away from the panels though they are still attached and working. The screen consequently gapes at the bottom somewhat, the wider the angle the panels are placed at the wider the gap. The screen can be mounted flat, reducing the gap to zero. At some point someone has attached electrical tape to the reverse of the wooden frame to support the weakened hinges. Not sure if it is helping, but it isn’t hurting so we have left this in situ.
