Antique Caucasian Marasali prayer rug of the scarce 'Black' ground colour. www.knightsantiques.co.uk
Size: 5ft 1in x 3ft 10in. (155 x 118cm)
Circa 1880.
This outstanding rug belongs to a scarce group known as 'Black' Marasali prayer rugs, due to the very dark indigo blue ground colour. The field is filled with rows of 'flaming' boteh with small crosses between the boteh. There are many interesting filler elements to the field including a samovar, a headless person, amulets and birds. The borders of this rug are of a rare design and very unusual to find on this type of rug.
The rug is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile, there a few scattered old repairs that are very well blended.
The rug has been hand washed and ready for use or display, the rug is suitable for light domestic use.
Ref: h-412.
