Sumak bedding bag end panel, Qarabagh area, Central Transcaucasia, circa 1870, 60 x 63 cm (23.5 x 25 inches) Part of our current online exhibition https://www.albertolevi.com/exhibitions/from-eurasia-with-love/ Here we have two boldly drawn devices of strong heraldic character in emerald green, highlighted by details in cotton, floating against a rich terracotta red background. Because of the impeccable use of positive/negative reciprocals, one can sense that the weaver had a full knowledge of the pattern, translating it with clarity and self confidence. Distinguishing the sumak weavings of the Shahsavan from those of the myriad of other tribes populating the Qarabagh region is quite a difficult task; while we see some of the elements present here in classic Shahsavan bags, one can also see parallels with the rich Armenian textile art tradition.
